Land and Environment Master of Forest Ecosystem Science

Why study the MFES at Melbourne?

Melbourne’s forest science education and research programs have an outstanding reputation nationally and internationally based on a long tradition of excellence. The new Master of Forest Ecosystem Science builds on this reputation with the talent and vision to continue to play a leadership role in forest science education and scholarship in the future.

Highest quality teaching and cutting-edge scholarship — the Master of Forest Ecosystem Science is taught by our most experienced teachers and leading scholars from across the university in collaboration with forest science educators and practitioners nationally and internationally. The result is a diverse range of subjects based on cutting-edge developments in forest and ecosystem science.

World-class facilities — the long-standing partnership in forest research and education between the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Government has recently culminated in the creation of the southern hemisphere’s largest and best-equipped forest science teaching and research campus at Creswick. MFES students will benefit from all aspects of this excellent facility.

Vibrant research culture and a global learning environment — ongoing success with national competitive grants spanning topics from climate change science to water and biodiversity conservation maintains a vibrant research culture in the School. Two Cooperative Research Centres (Bushfire and Forestry) and State funded research programs add to the in-house research activities so that research is a compulsory element of the MFES student experience.

Strong industry and forest sector connections —
Students will be provided with opportunities for internships and research projects with land and fire management agencies across Australia, in forest-based industries, consulting companies and non-government organizations (NGO’s) working nationally and internationally to support sustainable forest management and intergovernmental organizations such as the UN-FAO, ITTO and others. This will lead to strong industry connections and employment prospects.
